FORGOTTEN FRAME

How we research

A short, honest account of how stories on this site are put together, and what we do when we get something wrong.

Who is responsible

Forgotten Frame is a small independent publication. Stories are bylined to the Forgotten Frame Editorial Desk rather than to named writers, because we do not want to present individual credentials we cannot back up. Responsibility for what is published sits with the publication itself; you can reach the editor at editorial@forgottenframe.com.

Facts

  • We work from archives, official records, court filings, contemporary reporting and recognised reference works, and list the main ones at the foot of each story.
  • Specific claims — dates, numbers, quotations — are checked against more than one source where possible. If sources disagree, we say so rather than picking one silently.
  • We do not report original interviews or reporting we have not done. Our contribution is selection, close reading of the image and the record, and context.

Uncertainty and claims about people

Historical records are often incomplete. When a cause, date or identification is disputed, the story says so in the text. Stories about living people label their central claim as confirmed or admitted, public record, reported, or denied and disputed, and reporting is never written up as established fact.

Reading the photograph

In our flagship stories we separate what a photograph visibly shows from what it cannot establish on its own. A picture is evidence of a moment; it is rarely evidence of a cause, a motive or a name. Those come from the written record, and we keep the two apart.

Images and licences

Each photograph is checked individually on the licence page for that specific file. We record the creator, holding collection, licence and the date of the check, and print that record with the story. We do not publish AI-generated images of real people. The full rules are in our image and copyright policy.

Use of AI tools

AI tools may be used to help with research leads, outlining and drafting. Nothing is published on that basis alone: every story is reviewed and edited by a person, and every factual claim must trace back to a source we can name. AI output is never treated as a source.

Corrections

If you find an error, email editorial@forgottenframe.com or use our contact page. Corrections are made on the story itself and the updated date in the byline changes. Image credit or rights problems go to rights@forgottenframe.com. See also about Forgotten Frame.
