The short version

Why the first attempt collapsed

The two of them have given a consistent account of 2003, and it is not a story about a secret betrayal. It is a story about attention. Their joint statement at the time attributed the postponement to media coverage of the wedding, and both have returned to that explanation since — Lopez describing the period as the most painful of her life, Affleck describing a level of scrutiny that neither of them had any way to manage and which he believes damaged both their careers at the time.

What the filing itself actually says

The petition is a short, standard California form. It cites irreconcilable differences, the only no-fault ground available in the state. It lists a date of separation. It does not allege misconduct by either party, because California divorce law does not ask for any. Reporting that treated the document as a revelation was reading meaning into a form that, by design, contains none — apart from the date, which was the couple's own anniversary.

The aftermath

Both kept working through the filing. Lopez appeared at Sundance in January 2025 and continued taking film roles and touring. Affleck continued directing and producing through Artists Equity, the studio he co-founded with Matt Damon in 2022, and has spoken publicly since about the divorce in measured, non-accusatory terms.

Affleck has also spoken publicly about the difference between the two eras of the relationship, describing the first as something that happened to two people who were unprepared, and the second as a decision made by adults who knew exactly what the coverage would be.
