Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston married on 29 July 2000 in Malibu. He was an established film star; she was in the sixth season of the most-watched comedy on American television. On 7 January 2005 they issued a joint statement announcing their separation. Aniston filed for divorce on 25 March 2005, citing irreconcilable differences, and the divorce was finalised on 2 October 2005.
In between those two dates, Pitt filmed Mr. & Mrs. Smith with Angelina Jolie. The film was released in June 2005. That sequence — separation announced in January, film released in June, divorce final in October — is the entire factual basis of a narrative that has been running for twenty years.

What is confirmed
- PUBLIC RECORD: the marriage ran from 29 July 2000 to 2 October 2005 and the petition cited irreconcilable differences, alleging no misconduct.
- CONFIRMED: the separation was announced in a joint statement issued by both parties on 7 January 2005 — an unusually cooperative document for a split of this profile.
- CONFIRMED: Pitt and Jolie filmed Mr. & Mrs. Smith in 2004 and both later said publicly that their relationship began during or around that production. Neither has ever confirmed an overlap with the marriage, and both have denied one.
- CONFIRMED: Aniston and Pitt both won Screen Actors Guild Awards on the same night in January 2020 and were photographed together backstage.
- CONFIRMED: Pitt won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 2020; Aniston won a SAG Award in 2020 and has been Emmy-nominated repeatedly for The Morning Show.
- PUBLIC RECORD: no filing in the 2005 divorce alleges infidelity, because California's no-fault system provides no mechanism for it.
In their own words
“We would like to announce that after seven years together we have decided to formally separate. This decision is the result of much thoughtful consideration.”
The statement went on to say — explicitly — that the separation was not the result of any of the speculation reported by the tabloid media. That line is the only direct on-the-record comment either made about the reporting at the time, and it is routinely omitted from retellings.
Aniston gave one substantial interview in 2005, in which she spoke about the end of the marriage in personal terms and about the coverage that followed. Pitt has spoken occasionally in the years since, describing the period as one in which he was, by his own account, not living the life he wanted. Both accounts are their own and neither contains an allegation against the other.
Aniston has addressed one recurring line of coverage directly: the persistent claim that the marriage ended over her unwillingness to have children. She has publicly rejected that characterisation and, in 2022, spoke about years of fertility treatment during and after that period. That is her account, given on the record, and it contradicts a narrative that ran for the better part of two decades without a single named source behind it.
What remains disputed
The overlap question — whether the relationship between Pitt and Jolie began before the separation — has been denied by both of them, is unsupported by any document, and has never been established. It is recorded here as DENIED / DISPUTED and nothing more.

The litigation lasted eight, ran across two countries, survived one disqualified judge, and outlived the divorce itself in a fight over a French vineyard. Also excluded: the two decades of reunion reporting. There has been no announcement, no statement and no photograph indicating a relationship between Pitt and Aniston since 2005. The 2020 backstage images show two former spouses greeting each other at an awards ceremony, which is what they were widely captioned as, and what they remain.
Why this divorce shaped the decade around it
The 2005 split arrived exactly as the celebrity weeklies reached their commercial peak. The format those magazines ran on — a serialised conflict with a cast, a villain and a running scoreboard — required a story that could be updated every seven days without any new facts. This one supplied it for years, largely by inventing the parts that were missing.
The clearest evidence of that is the merchandise. Two rival slogan T-shirts were manufactured and sold in the mid-2000s asking readers to pick a side between the two women involved. Neither Aniston nor Jolie had anything to do with them. It is the point at which a real divorce became a consumer product, and it is the reason the story is still cited in writing about celebrity media.

What happened next
Both careers grew. Aniston moved from film comedy into producing and, from 2019, into prestige television with The Morning Show, which she also executive produces. Pitt built Plan B into one of the most successful production companies in American film — its output includes multiple Best Picture winners — and won an acting Oscar in 2020.
Pitt's second marriage, to Jolie, ended in a divorce case that took eight years to work through the courts. Aniston's second marriage ended in an amicable joint statement in 2018. Neither has remarried since.
The 2020 SAG images are worth one final note of precision, because they are the most-reproduced photographs of either person from the last decade. They were taken backstage at an industry awards ceremony where both had just won, they show a brief greeting, and they were released through the normal press pool. They are not evidence of anything beyond two colleagues who were once married being civil in a corridor — which is, in the end, the least sensational and most likely reading of every fact in this article.
What became of them
Both working, both at the top of their industries, both entirely done discussing this. Twenty years after the joint statement, the documented record still consists of four items: a marriage certificate, a joint announcement, a no-fault petition and a judgment. Everything else that anyone remembers about it was supplied by someone else.
