Eleven Years, Two Children and One Sentence: How Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman's Marriage Ended

What actually happened

Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman met in 1989 while making Days of Thunder. He was already one of the biggest box-office draws in the world; she was a 22-year-old Australian actor known outside her own country for a single thriller. They married on 24 December 1990, adopted two children, and made three films together across the following decade — the last of which, Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut, cast them as a married couple whose marriage is coming apart.

On 5 February 2001 Cruise's representative announced that the couple had separated. Cruise filed for divorce the same month in Los Angeles, citing irreconcilable differences. One further piece of context belongs in the record rather than in the speculation. Unresolved

The most persistent explanations attached to this divorce — including those concerning religion, the making of Eyes Wide Shut, and the timing of the separation relative to a pregnancy that was reported at the time — are not established by anything in the public record. Some have been asserted by third parties; some rest on interviews given years later by people who were not in the marriage.
